I just finished reading Interesting Times, by Terry Pratchett. I thought I had read this one before, but nothing really felt familiar. This novel had two distinct parts. During the first part, Cohen and the Silver Horde were on the way to some great unknown heist while Rincewind was being drawn into a communist revolution. It felt like Pratchett relied on the idea of parodying round-world events rather than having much to say about them. The impotent revolution powered by slogans alone was funny, but then the joke is run back dozens of times.

During the second part, Cohen and the Silver Horde were digging in for a war of conquest against impossible odds after abandoning their ill-conceived heist while Rincewind was banging around in the countryside by himself. The transition of Lord Hong from master manipulator to common street thug didn’t make any sense, and I would have preferred if his gradual break under the pressure of his failing plots had manifested in more fitting final act. However, the barking dog was an incredibly satisfying conclusion.

Overall the book was a good amount of fun and well worth the read.
